In the Fall of academic year 2006-07, the VITAL institutions submitted records of 2,804 students entering teacher education programs for the first time. Of these students, 1,579 (56.3%) were matched on the Fall Headcount with a TEACHED status of other than '0 - Not Enrolled in a Teacher Education Program'.
| Comparison of Data Points | |||
| VITAL Submission | Fall Headcount Submission | Percentage | |
| Four-year undergraduate | 1379 | 917 | 66.5% |
| Master's programs | 824 | 490 | 59.5% |
| Licensure-only | 283 | 16 | 5.7% |
| Alternative/Career Switchers | 114 | 10 | 8.8% |
| Five-year undergraduate | 204 | 146 | 71.6% |
| Total | 2804 | 1579 | 56.3% |
What this means is that institutions have not been very good about identifying students in teacher preparation programs to SCHEV through flagging them on the various file submissions. Further, these data help make a strong case for the necessity of the VITAL data collections.
