The Virginia Student Financial Assistance Program is comprised of two companion subprograms the Virginia Commonwealth Award (COMA) and Virginia Guaranteed Assistance Program (VGAP). Both of these programs are need-based financial aid programs that apply to in-state, degree, certificate, or diploma-seeking undergraduates enrolled at a Virginia public college or university.

COMA, is solely a need-based program that provides financial assistance to students taking at least a half-time course load. In addition to the need requirement, the VGAP program has a merit requirement and is only available full-time students.
